This does not apply if you unlink the values. See image: GIMP's option is a little more explicit with both horizontal and vertical resolutions rather than one value to account for both. To do this, ensure the circular link between the two resolution values is closed. Clicking on the link toggles it to be open/unlinked or closed/linked. If linked, changing the value for “X resolution” (width resolution) to 300 automatically updates “Y resolution” (height resolution) to be the same. When changing resolution, Photoshop automatically adjusts the width/height. I'll go with resizing images or adjusting resolution, cropping, adjusting contrast, color correction, using the clone stamp tool and exporting images for the web. Today, I'll be showing some of the basic things I often do in Photoshop but using GIMP instead. I digress, but just know that open source is awesome for the technology world and its users. Developers contribute to open source applications to collaborate on something bigger than themselves, while simultaneously opening opportunities in the software community. There are no strings attached, and it's maintained by dedicated volunteers. It's available for Mac, Windows and Linux. When talking about open source, this means it's free to download and use. It's an open source alternative to Photoshop and an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. Thinking about accessible programs for all patrons, I wanted to talk about GIMP. This doesn't make sense for an occasional user to have. Subscription plans for Adobe's Creative Suite can be quite expensive, and it adds up over time. At the Media Lab, we have Photoshop available to use but I wouldn't expect anyone to have a copy at home or on their personal computers. There are plenty of powerful features right out of the box, and it's more than just adding filters like it is with Instagram. With the way this program is improving with each version, I will state with some certainty that by the time Version 3 comes out, Adobe Photoshop is going to start trembling in its boots.By Patrick Villanueva, Media Lab AssistantĪdobe Photoshop is known as the best program to edit images, and it's something we were taught to master in art school for creative industry practice. Here is an installation guide and the link to download the program. People who need the 16 and 32 bit channels are going to ‘cinepaint’ and ‘krita’ at the moment. The GIMP team is working on adding 16 bit channel, but it won’t be ready for the upcoming Version 2.8. Photoshop’s 8, 16 and 32 bit-per-channel images. The two drawbacks that keep this program from converting the professionals is its lack of CMYK color scheme advanced support and its use of 8-bit per-channel images vs. GIMP is very fast and nimble in applying the effects I tested on it. I was able to crop, rotate, apply several filters and touch up my test photo with ease. With only a bit of time getting used to the different interface, I was up and running. Although this is not a widely used format, GIMP has the capability to save to PSD formats and can read/write to BMP, JPEG,GIG,TIFF, PNG plus several others. The last screen is the display screen where you can see the history of all you have done and have access to channels and paths. Being able to undo history and use Layers has further increased its usability and competitive edge. The canvas screen is similar to Photoshop and it has some nifty filters and advanced color management tools. Similar to Photoshop, GIMP has the basics: Pencil, Brush, Airbrush, Blur, Smudge, Crop and Color Picker, Clone Stamp and many others. You have a toolbox screen that displays all your basic tools. When you first open up GIMP, you have 3 screens come up. For those who must have a Photoshop lookalike, you can always try ‘GimpShop’ and offshoot of GIMP with a Photoshop style interface. If you are a regular on Photoshop, it will take a bit of time to get used to the new interface. If you have never used Photoshop, then you will learn and adapt quickly. I must admit, it took a bit of time to figure out where everything was on GIMP. The interface is the first thing that confuses most Photoshop users. This is a very robust image editing program that allows even the beginner to do some pretty amazing tricks. The current Version for my Linux Mint 5 computer is Version 2.4.5, and for some reason I could not update to the new version, so I am using my Windows Vista machine to test the latest version. This review focuses on GIMP’s latest version, currently version 2.6.2. However, GIMP was not designed to be a Photoshop clone.Īdobe Photoshop retails for around $450. These two programs are frequently compared to each other due to their similarities. GIMP, the GNU image manipulation program, is basically the open source version of Adobe Photoshop.
